Old Dorks Zeitgeist

Update Two

Zeitgeist Two
Sep 24, 2011

After Malkie’s new friend Mercliffe wanders off, The Special Constabulary Unit starts doing its sweep of the crowd, as outlined in Blake’s original plan. The three subjects taken into custody, Coulton, Iscalio, and Dafton, are being held in a nearby warehouse which the Flint PD is using as an event headquarters.

Occasional carriages make the journey across the Bridge to Fleet Square, disgorging various nobles and other dignitaries to mill about a roped-off VIP area near the docked Coaltongue. The gangplank is currently guarded by sailors and no one is allowed on-board. A scaffolding supports a wooden-plank walkway to the prow of the ship, where the King will christen the ship.

It is nearly an hour before the King’s carriage is scheduled to arrive. The Assistant Chief Inspector tracks down Blake. He is uncharacteristically dressed in a coffee-colored velvet suit. A very fine bowler hat of matching color has settled upon his head. “Quite the show, innit, Sergeant?”

A halfling carrying a tray of fine chocolates walks by, headed for the VIP section. “Only the finest for our king, eh?” he says with a smile. "Now then, we’re about to earn our pay. Lots of nobles about, so first: don’t make any more scenes. And don’t talk to the nobles unless they talk to you first, right?

“Second, if anything else goes wrong, go ahead and continue to handle things on your own. I’m going to be applying my not-inconsiderable charm to Very Important People. The Constabulary doesn’t get by with just good will and pretty faces, you know.

“Third, you and your team did good work, neutralizing those threats without too much ruckus, so I’ve got a surprise for you.”

He grabs his cane and leads Blake (and any other nearby SCU members) to the gangplank of the Coaltongue, where the King’s chief advisor and bodyguard, Harkover Lee is descending. Delft approaches, right hand extended. “Minister Lee, I’d like you to meet Sergeant Blake Arrington. Her team was in charge of the crowd security running up to the event. Blake, this old man is Principal Minister Harkover Lee.”

Lee stands straight and tall. A thin smile crosses his lips. “A pleasure, Sergeant,” he says, his accent showing a slight tinge of Ber influence. “I was hoping you and your team could help me out tonight. The King is due to make a major announcement aboardship and I’d like a few extra eyes and ears to keep an eye on the crowd. I want to get a feeling for how various individuals react, as well as having someone to help corral some of the more, ah, recalcitrant members of the assembly.”

As he says this last bit, his eyes turn pointedly to a carriage that has just pulled up, where the King’s sister, the Duchess Ethelyn of Shale, is disembarking, helped by her elven handmaiden.

“What say you, Sergeant? Will you and your team do me the honor of coming to the shipboard event tonight?”

Me:
Blake swallows her grimace of distaste at more of this insufferable people-watching duty but puts on her best fake smile and nods, “Of course, Minister.”
Sep 25, 2011

Scott:
“Excellent.” Lee produces an envelope with five VIP passes, allowing the entire unit unrestricted access to the ship and the VIP area near Fleet Square. “Take these,” he says, “and I’ll see you later tonight. If you’ll excuse me, I need to meet the King’s carriage before it leaves the Royal Estate.”
Sep 25, 2011

Scott:
Time: 4:30

The group has about half an hour to do whatever they need to do to either prep for their new assignment or continue carrying out their current assignment, or whatever it is PCs do with spare time. After that half hour, the King’s carriage will be in close enough proximity that they may want to link up with it.

Scott:
(I’ll just railroad this along if no one has anything)
Sep 26, 2011

Me:
I got stuff – I just thought I’d avoid railroading the whole thing and wait to see if anyone else had anything. :) I’ll post later.

Eric:
Durakh-al is currently built to be railroaded ;) He will follow Blakearrington like our new puppy (!)

Kat:

Eric:
Yep – I’ll post pictures. Kiwi is just starting to get along with him.

Erin Lee Newburn and Scott:
Malkie remains unconvinced that a couple of disgruntled old racists like Dafton are the only threat at a major appearance like this.
Sep 26, 2011

Erin Lee Newburn:
Someone has to deal with the ship while it’s moored here. Are there any workers still hanging around the loading bay or milling around by the mooring lines or anything, or have all the dirty blue collar types been cleared out?

If so, Malkie would like to chat them up, see if anyone’s seen anything weird. She’s particularly interested in anyone skulking around the place before the police/general festivities arrived. I’m guessing the hands have been here since before dawn, and might’ve seen someone casing the docks or finding a hiding place.
Sep 26, 2011

Scott:
Malkie runs into some Risuri sailors who are very proud of having earned the honor of handling the mooring lines for the launch of Risur’s new flagship. They’re not much in the mood for chatting with some skulky little halfling. In fact, if she doesn’t show her badge, they’re probably going to be more suspicious of her than she is of them.
Sep 26, 2011

Erin Lee Newburn:
Malkie frowns. She was hoping for locals. When the sailors give her the eye, she rolls her eyes, flashes the badge and asks more directly: “Seen anyone suspicious lurking around this morning?”
Sep 27, 2011

Scott:
The sailors indicate that they have not seen anything suspicious.

Me:
Blake tries to unobtrusively get closer to the duchess. She wants to both observe her and eavesdrop on any conversations she might have.

Me:
Stealth +10

Sep 27, 2011

Scott:
Blake manages to observe the Duchess Ethelyn in conversation with Governor Stanfield. He is trying to talk about what an impressive machine the Coaltongue is while she is calmly explaining her lack of enthusiasm about the project. She tells the Governor that his “metal monstrosity” is probably only being held afloat by “infernal Tiefling magic.”

“Don’t be fooled by all this technology, Governor,” she says. “Remember the old ways of the Skyseers and Fey. Don’t be tricked into thinking Danor’s industry is good for Risur just because my brother uses the word progress a lot.”
Sep 27, 2011

Me:
If no one else has anything we can go hang out with the King.
Sep 27, 2011

Michael:
I do not have anything.
Sep 27, 2011

Me:
I’m sorry you’re aware of that – it strips me of the entertainment of informing you that your life is an empty shell devoid of meaning.
